What is Pecorino Romano cheese?
A few of our Italian recipes include Pecorino Romano cheese. Some not familiar with the cheese have wondered, what (the heck) is Pecorino Romano cheese?
In a few short words, it is the cheese that I grew up enjoying. If you are from Southern Italy, Rome or Naples especially, Pecorino Romano cheese is an everyday cheese used in many recipes.
Pecorino Romano is a hard Italian cheese and mostly used for grating. It is made out of sheep milk. The Italian word, pecora, means sheep. Pecorino Romano cheese is most often added to pasta dishes. It has a distinct taste – sharp and salty and complements certain pastas.
Why a rotary cheese grater?
This is the cheese grater my family used when I was growing up. It is the best. You do not have to hold the cheese in your hand or take the chance of grating your fingernail (ugh!) along with the cheese. Place a chunk of cheese in the container section of the grater, press down on the handle and turn the grater.
What are the negatives about using a rotary cheese grater? None! To be fair, one small challenge would be that in the beginning it takes a little getting used to. You have to squeeze the handle while you turn the grater. But it sure is fun to use and it gets the job done.
