German Restaurants Across the US

Recently I was reading an article in the New York Times about a good German restaurant in NYC and about how German restaurants are becoming more popular. The influence of Germany on American food is largely hidden, generally as it has gone for a long time with little mention. This is unusual considering that statistically, one fourth of the population of America is of German descent.

There were times when German restaurants had high culinary standards in various America cities such as Milwaukee, St. Louis and Cincinnati. By reading about German foods, I came to know that the frankfurter and hamburger, cured meats and sausages of various varieties, various other America recipes and egg noodles all have German origins.

The German foods also have a great influence on the barbecue recipes and cooking of Central Texas. A few famous foods of America that have retained their German names are sour and sweet pot roast, sausages knackwurst, sauerbraten, bratwurst, sauerkraut and liverwurst; Americans love these foods.

After reading so much about German foods, I wanted to mention restaurants in different states that are known for their German foods and recipes for readers across the country. I researched top German restaurants in the U.S. and made a list, tasted few dishes and found the reason why German food is loved by everyone.

The Bavarian restaurant & Biergarten – Asheville, NC. It has an old fashioned German menu and is known for their wild game menu.

Haus Murphys – Glendale, AZ. This restaurant has a reasonably priced menu and the best beer on tap. It was featured on The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

Christls German Inn – St. Palatine, IL. The dishes here have the taste of home cooked food. You can also enjoy a German beer or wine.

Margaret’s German Restaurant – Tulsa, Oklahoma. This restaurant is known for the best sausages ever and also will provide catering for your next party.

Karl Ratzsch’s – Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is a beautiful German inn with German plates, mugs and reminders of everything from Germany. The chandeliers are made from elk antlers and deer. The staff dresses in German dresses. The bar is full of German specialties. Food is first class. Rated one of the best German restaurants in America.

Henk‘s European Deli & Black Forest Bakery- Dallas, Texas. The appetizers consist of potato pancakes and German cold cuts. Lunch includes such items as Reuben sandwiches and bratwurst. Dinner is served on Saturday and Friday nights. Entrees include sauerbraten and schnitzel. Specializes in German cakes and breads.
