Today in the world of food science we all are aware of the word fat and cholesterol and this comes under the umbrella category known as “lipids”. Though, these days we do not use this word in everyday conversation.
Understand the facts
We can define lipids as organic compounds, which do not get dissolved in water and it involves oils, fats, waxes, triglycerides and sterols (including cholesterol).
Although scientifically lipid is the correct term that should be used to describe both cholesterol and fats, it is fairly common for us to say: “fats” when we actually mean “lipids”. After talking about this it will be possible to state that cholesterol is a kind of fat.
The unique fat
One of the unique types of fat is cholesterol. The majority of fats you and I read about have simple chemistry. For instance, one important fat known as fatty acids are generally straight chemical chains. Cholesterol is actually a complicated chemically, in its structure it has chemical rings that occur in specific configuration. And if you look at your body it gets a little complicated for the body to make such kinds of unique fat.
Cholesterol and calorie connection
If you look in a practical, dietary sense, there is one major difference between other fats and cholesterol. The majority of times when you and I talk about fat in food, actually we are mentioning huge quantity of food parts that have huge quantity of calories. It is very common for a fast food meal to contain about fifty grams of fat. Now this fifty grams of fat offers approximately 450 calories.
Now if we look at this it is quite different from cholesterol. You and I never have a consumption of food that contains more than one gram of cholesterol, and above all from cholesterol we never obtain any major number of calories. Hence, in this respect other types of fat in food is different from cholesterol.
Damage of too much cholesterol
But again this does not mean that we don’t have to think about cholesterol in regards to excess calories and excess grams. It does not mean that it is not a kind of fat with potential risk of health. If you consume cholesterol in excess it can be a health problem linked to cardiovascular health, although there is no straight relationship between risk of cardiovascular disease and dietary cholesterol.
