What is Broccoli Rabe?
Broccoli Rabe (pronounced Broccoli Rob) is also called rabe or rapini. It is a leafy green vegetable that is popular in Southern Italy. If you are from an Italian family, you probably have eaten Rabe more often than broccoli!
The vegetable has a slightly bitter taste and is steamed or lightly sauteed in olive oil. This is a simple, easy, quick recipe that takes a few minutes to make.
Ingredients
1 pound Broccoli Rabe
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 clove garlic sliced thin
2 teaspoons Pecorino Romano cheese
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
Step #1
Place broccoli rabe in large pot of boiling water 2-3 minutes. Do not over cook. It should be slightly hard. Drain the broccoli rabe. Place it in a bowl with ice and water. Let it stay in the ice water for a few minutes.

Step #2
In a large skillet pan heat oil and garlic for 1 minute. Drain Broccoli Rabe and add to pan. Saute for approximately 5-7 minutes until desired softness.
Step #3
Garnish with crushed red pepper flakes and Pecorino Romano cheese. Enjoy!

You should be able to find rabe in the produce section in most markets. In some areas it is not available in large supermarkets but usually more high-end markets have it. Look for the Andy Boy label. You might need to go to a Gelson’s or Whole Foods or a farmers market. We also heard that Ralphs carries it!
Could you tell me where to find Rabe in Memphis, TN? I reside in the 38125 zip.
barbara,
We live in the San Diego area and I find it at Henry’s. I’ve never found it at the other grocery stores. Good luck in your search!
